A man was arrested on Rt. 91 North Thursday night after police discovered dangerous firearms and ammunition in his van.
According to Massachusetts State Police, at around 11:15 p.m. Trooper Joseph Petty from the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Northampton stopped a Chevrolet Express Van on Rt. 91 North Whatley for displaying Pennsylvania registration plates that were expired.
Police say the operator of the van, Timothy R. Harding, 33 of Brattleboro, VT, informed Petty he was traveling back to Vermont from Long Island, New York, where he claimed he had visited with friends and had purchased an Amplifier he had located on Craig's List.
Police also said that while Petty was talking with Harding, he noticed Harding was very nervous, sweating and visibly shaking.
Petty's investigation confirmed that the vehicle was not properly registered.
According to police, Petty then called for a tow truck to remove the vehicle from the highway. Before the van was towed, Petty did routine check inside for suspicious inventory and found a nine millimeter handgun in a back pack on the front passenger seat.
Police say Petty continued searching the van and also discovered a Cetme Sporter .308 rifle and a Lugar model Tec 9, 9 millimeter handgun in a duffle bag in the rear compartment of the Van. In addition to the weapons, Petty also discovered 159 rounds of ammunition.
Police confirm that after further investigation they found Harding was not properly licensed to possess these weapons and ammunition.
Harding was arrested and transported to the State Police Barracks in Northampton where he faces many charges including unlawful possession of firearms and possession of ammunition.
Police say the weapons and ammunition were seized and stored as evidence.
Harding will appear in Greenfield District court today.
