A family of seven has two humble brothers, who deviated from their normal route home from work, for saving their lives during a house fire early Friday morning.
The twin brothers, Jose and Josue Ramirez, were going home from work about 3:30 a.m. when they said they smelled smoke and saw it blanketing their neighborhood and decided to look for the source.
They drove around the area and saw flames coming from the attic of a home near 47th Avenue and McDowell Road.
"We normally don't take this way home," Jose Ramirez said. "My brother was driving, and I noticed flames coming out of the attic and told him to pull over."
They banged on the front door, but Josue Ramirez forced his way inside a side door when there was no answer and woke up the family of seven, Nunez said.
"I yelled out and this guy came out and I said, 'The house is on fire, get everybody out."
All occupants got out of the house in time and no one was hurt, said Larry Nunez of the Phoenix Fire Department.
Both brothers were calm and humble as they were swarmed by local media and thanked by each member of the family, including two children.
"You do what you got to do," Josue Ramirez said.
Both brothers said they felt good about their actions, but that they didn't do anything special and didn't consider themselves heroes.
"As long as the family is safe," Jose Ramirez said. "Two little kids - I got a daughter of mine, too."
Jose Ramirez said one of the occupants told them to stop by some time and he would repay them. "We don't want anything," Jose Ramirez said. "It's just karma."
"I would want someone to help me out," Josue Ramirez said. "I feel good, feel good. We talked to all of them to make sure they are all OK. It's just crazy."
As to what the brothers were going to do later Friday? "Go to sleep," Josue Ramirez said with a grin. "Got to work."
The fire damaged the interior of the house and displaced the family.
Nunez said the family was at a crisis shelter and would be taken to a temporary shelter.
The cause had not been determined and the investigation was continuing.
