Late Sunday morning, parishioners from Mater Dolorosa gathered outside of their church for an Easter event.
The Springfield Diocese closed the church back in June 2011; however, the group held a year-long, 24/7 vigil inside the building until the Vatican ordered them to leave the church last year.
The parishioners have appealed to the Vatican and they continue to await word from the new pope on whether or not their church will be allowed to reopen.
"I think he wants to put back together the organization of the church that keeps churches open, so they can provide the faith and humility that is necessary to deal with the problems of the world today," said church spokesman Vic Anop.
When the Vatican ordered the parishioners to leave the church, they also instructed the Diocese not to sell the building or remove the steeple before a ruling is made.
