As of Thursday, ice cream trucks drivers in Northampton will now be required to obtain a permit from police.
The City Council made this decision, with intent to run background checks on vendors to screen for drug and sex offenses.
Vendors are now required to pay a $50 fee for the license, which will cover the cost for police to conduct background checks. The must also display the permit on the truck at all times.
Although ice cream trucks have been a common sight in Northampton, some may come as far as Connecticut.
A $100 fine will be issued for a first offense, $200 for a second offense and $300 for a third offense when the ice cream truck driver violates this ordinance.
