Northampton leaders are trying to figure out how to close a $2.4 million budget gap.
Mayor David Narkewicz has been holding a series of public forums to hear community input.
One of the proposals on the table to close that budget gap would be laying off more than 20 teachers from city schools.
The mayor says neither he nor parents want to see that happen.
"It's not something that I want to see happen. We had a great rally downtown, our high school students marched downtown today to let me know and let the community know that they want to preserve these teachers and these programs," Narkewicz said.
The mayor went on to say that much of the issue has to do with lack of state funding.
The next public meeting will be held on Monday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at Ryan Road School in Florence.
