AGAWAM, MA (WSHM) -

Power has been restored after an outage cut the power to thousands of Western Massachusetts Electric Company customers in Agawam Tuesday night.

According to WMECO's website, more than 6,600 customers, which is more than half the town, were without power about 8:45 p.m.

A WMECO representative told CBS 3 Springfield "equipment failure" appeared to be the problem and crews were investigating.

According to Agawam Mayor Richard Cohen's Facebook page, a transformer may have blown.
