(RNN) - Ben Affleck's Argo was the big winner at the 85th Academy Awards, taking the Best Picture prize.

The film, about a CIA operative creating a fake movie to gain access to Iran and save American hostages, was presented the prize by First Lady Michelle Obama and acting legend Jack Nicholson.

Mrs. Obama announced the winner via satellite from the White House.

Affleck, who directed the film, accepted the award.

"There are eight great films that have every right, as much a right to be up here as we do," he said of the other best-picture nominees.

Daniel Day Lewis was also a big winner Sunday night. The star of Steven Spielberg's Civil War biopic, Lincoln won the Best Actor prize, becoming the first thespian to ever win the award three times.

Lewis' other Oscar-winning performances came in 1989 for playing Christy Brown in My Left Foot and in 2007 for playing Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood.

Jennifer Lawrence won the much-coveted Best Actress award for her role as a troubled widow in Silver Linings Playbook.

The 22-year-old had previously been nominated for the category in 2010 for her breakthrough role in Winter's Bone.

Ang Lee won the Best Director award with his film, Life of Pi, beating out Spielberg, who many blogs had predicted to take home the award.

This was Lee's second Best Director nod, having previously won for helming 2005's Brokeback Mountain.
