HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -

The state Health and Human Services Secretary John Polanowicz came to Western Massachusetts to announce the grand opening of the Veterans' Assistance Center at the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke.

The center will give counseling to veterans of all ages and access to state and federal benefits.

"These are tough times, and I think that a lot of times veterans don't realize what they're eligible for ... and so to be able to sit down and talk to a counselor ... to be able to sit down and see what their benefits are ... it is going to be a big thing. It's something that the community has always wanted to be able to have ... that one-stop center," said Steven Como, executive vice president of Solider On.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has increased funding by 9 percent for veterans services for the 2014 fiscal year.
