The New North Citizen's Council has voted to endorse Penn National Gaming's $807 million proposal for a casino in Springfield's north end.
The endorsement comes a week after the casino developer met with members of the council, which represents citizens who live in the north end of the city. Council members cited Penn's willingness to address concerns about the impact on the neighborhood as well as the economy in backing the plan.
Penn National Gaming is competing with MGM Resorts International to build a casino in the city of Springfield. A decision by the city's gaming commission on whether to allow one or both developers to move forward in the bid process is expected later this month.
