Bohemia, N.Y. (PRWEB) January 30, 2013
On January 30, 2013, after the East Bay Bicycle Coalition announced their mission to prevent cycling accidents throughout Alameda, commuter bike safety advocates Linus Bike proposes that cyclists of Alameda “play it safe.”
According to the Alameda Patch, on the second Thursday of each month the East Bay Bicycle Coalition is offering free, two-hour bicycle safety workshops. The East Bay Bicycle Coalition has earned the support of the Alameda City Police Department.
The East Bay Bicycle Coalition reported on their website that the classes are “all open to the general public, but are also being offered to ticketed cyclists to qualify for a fine reduction.”
According to the East Bay Bicycle Coalition’s website, safety instructors certified by the League of American Bicyclists will help students “[learn] basic rules of the road, how to share the road with cars on busy streets, how to equip your bicycle, lock your bike, fit your helmet, use transit, and avoid crashes by riding predictably, visibly, and communicating with motorists by your actions and signals.”
The article states that cyclists “are riding in a city with a relatively high rate of bicycle collisions, according to numbers from the Office of Traffic Safety. Out of 103 California cities of similar population, only nine counted more bicycle collisions in 2010 than Alameda.”
“It is wonderful to hear that Alameda is taking the initiative to educate cycling novices,” says China Reevers, a Linus Bike representative. “With more educated cyclists sharing the roads with motorists, the less likely accidents will occur or increase. We applaud the initiative that the East Bay Bicycle Coalition is taking.”
