Springfield man arraigned for alleged 1991 rape and murder

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A Springfield man faced a judge Tuesday for an alleged rape and murder that occurred in 1991.

Police say Faustino Diaz, 54, was arrested Monday and charged with murder and aggravated rape of 90-year-old, Myrtle Marrett. Marrett was found beaten to death in her apartment in 1991.

Hampden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni says the case was able to be re-examined due to new technology and scientific advances.

Diaz is being held without right to bail. His next court date is set for Feb. 21.
