A Clarksville mother apparently had no idea her two toddlers were wandering in the street Friday night because she was on the computer using headphones, police said.
Officer Jim Knoll said Candace Sellner, 23, was taken into custody and charged with child abuse and neglect.
Knoll said the daughters, ages 2 and 5, were found walking barefoot down Royster Lane without adult supervision.
When officers arrived, they said a 21-year-old neighbor told them he had found the children when he arrived at his apartment, and kept the children with him until police arrived.
Officers said they spoke to the 5-year-old, who then told them where she and her sister lived.
Officers went to Sellner's apartment and Sellner said she had no idea the children were out of the home.
Police said it had been about half an hour between the time the children were found and their mother was located.
Additionally, police said the apartment in was deplorable condition, with clothes and trash on the floor and cockroaches climbing up the wall.
Police said the apartment smelled of ammonia and urine but no animals were living there.
Knoll said the Department of Children's Services has been contacted and responded to the scene for an investigation.
Knoll added that the children's father was contacted at work and came home to take care of the children.
