Family of murder victim honors her at candlelight vigil

Posted: Updated:

The family of the first murder victim of the year in Springfield came together to honor 57-year-old Norma Perez Wednesday night.

Police say she was killed by her son earlier this week after he allegedly stabbed a cab driver.

Dozens honored the mother and grandmother, singing songs and saying prayers.

Friends and family describe Perez as generous and loving and say it is hard knowing she's gone.

"Even though she's not here, we're still going to love her," said her grandson, Jordan.

"The outpouring and the amount of people here really demonstrates the type of person that Norma was. She would give the shirt off her back for people, she would help anyone and everyone," said close family friend, EJ Mandigo.

Her son is facing murder charges and is due back in court Feb. 7.
