An unusually strong flu season across the state, combined with 18 flu-related deaths, is forcing one local medical group to put tighter restrictions in place at their hospitals and outpatient facilities in western Massachusetts.
Citing the need to protect patients and staff, Baystate Health announced that beginning Wednesday their hospitals in Springfield, Greenfield, and Ware will no longer allow visitors under the age of 14.
In addition, anyone who has had the flu or who has been exposed to the virus is being asked not to visit patients. Baystate also recommends that no more than two visitors at a time enter hospital rooms.
Anyone with a doctor's or outpatient appointment at a Baystate facility is being asked to come alone or only come with one other person, if necessary. Patients are also being asked not to bring children with them to appointments.
