NORTH HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

North Haven police said a man was crushed to death at Sims Metal Management on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers were called to the facility on Universal Drive after receiving reports of an unresponsive man about 12:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, they said they found a man suffering from what appeared to be crushing injuries to his chest and abdomen.

"It's with great sadness that we confirm that a longtime customer and friend of our North Haven, CT, metals recycling facility was fatally struck, while unloading a scrap auto from his own flatbed car carrier," said Sims Metal spokesman Daniel Strechay in a statement Thursday. "While our employees immediately responded with first aid and notified emergency services, sadly, he was unable to be revived."

Police are still in the process of trying to notify his family.

Police and Occupational Safety and Health Administration are still trying to determine exactly what happened. The investigation by OSHA is expected to take at least six months.

Strechay said none of the company's personnel were involved in the incident. Officials at Sims Metal Management are working with state and local law enforcement as well as the OSHA.

Eyewitness News learned the company was fined $6,000 in June 2000 after a worker was injured when a metal box fell on his leg. Three other incidents at Sims Metal Management did not result in any citations being issued.

"As everyone knows, the safety of Sims Metal Management's employees and visitors to our facilities is of the utmost importance and an issue we spend a tremendous amount of time and resources on," Strechay said.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call the North Haven Police Department at 203-239-5321.
