Holyoke hosts 16th annual First Night Jr. event

Posted: Updated:

It was an early New Year's Eve celebration at Holyoke's Heritage Park on Monday afternoon as crowds of children and families joined together to ring in 2013 a few hours ahead of schedule.

"My favorite part is when the ball drops," said 9-year-old Kaitlyn Haynes.

Throughout the day, the park was filled with first night activities from merry-go-round rides to magic shows to all kinds of food and hot chocolate.

"I got my face painted, I got to get balloons I got to do a lot of things that are really fun," said Esteban Crespo.

Monday marked the 16th annual New Year's Eve Jr. Event and for many it's become an annual tradition to come to the Holyoke celebration.

"This is my 10th year of doing this between this and the children's museum and I still have families that when I started doing it in 2000 come every year and the kids are now 13,14,15 years old," said the operations manager of the Holyoke merry-go-round Marianne Holden.

"This is the third year we've come out we come every year to celebrate this," said Carrie Rubio. "Holyoke puts on a great New Year's Eve party for the kids and it tires them out for the parents at night."
