Local parents respond to NRA comments about guns in schools

Posted: Updated:

The National Rifle Association spoke out Friday for the first time since the shooting in Newtown, CT, saying the government should put an armed officer in every school across the country.

"The only way to protect from a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun," said CEO of the NRA Wayne Lapierre.

He says that the media and video games are to blame for a spike in violence, not guns.

"And to do it now to make sure blanket safety is in place when our kids return to school in January," Lapierre said.

It's an idea that is highlighting a divide among local parents.

"As a parent, as a mother of three children - no, I would not feel safe with my kids having their teachers have guns," said Jomaria Watkins, of Springfield.

Some parents against the idea say more guns could mean more violence.

"I don't really believe that more armed police officers is the answer, I believe less guns is the answer, especially automatic assault rifles," said Mark Bergeron, of Greenfield.

Parent Juan Laporte disagrees.

His 4-year-old son just started school. He says he'd feel safer knowing his kid was under watchful and armed security.

"Yes I do think they should have more armed police officers for the safety of the children and to keep bad guys from coming in and trying to alter children's lives," Laporte said.

Other parents in support of armed officers say the times are changing and security inside schools should change with them.

"Yes I believe so because this morning on my way to my job, they called me from the school that there would be a police officer from 7 in the morning until 3, and I said 'yes this is a great idea, today and forever,'" said Yaritzi Troche, of Holyoke.

The president is asking the NRA to join an effort to reduce gun violence.

Many on Capitol Hill are also working to pass a bill that would ban assault weapons. The NRA would oppose it.
