State and local officials gathered in Northampton Wednesday afternoon to switch on a newly-constructed solar array at MassDOT's District 2 building.
"Any way that we can save taxpayer dollars by implementing energy efficient measures, particularly harnessing the sun, to me that's a win-win," said Mayor David Narkewicz.
The project which encompasses hundreds of solar panels is the first of its kind in the Baystate to be built on state highway property.
"We're the second largest landholder in the Commonwealth, the DOT, and some land we can't develop and can't otherwise use so this was a really smart way to use the land," said MASSDOT Secretary and CEO Richard Davey.
The array is expected to power up to 30 percent of the building.
"We're really proud that they've chosen this as a demonstration project for what I think they want to do all across the state," said Narkewicz.
The array has no upfront cost to taxpayers. It was built by the JF White contracting company who will earn solar renewable energy credits for the project.
"Transportation is a huge generator, frankly, of greenhouse gas and anything we can do whether it's improving public transit across the state or in instances like this improve the way we do business it is critical," said Davey.
