Hundreds fill St. Michael's Parish for Newtown, CT vigil

EAST LONGMEADOW, MA (WSHM) -

Hundreds filled the pews at St. Michael's Parish in East Longmeadow Tuesday night.

It was an emotional gathering as families held onto each other tightly and cried for those they didn't even know.

There were 26 candles for 26 names - the names of the 20 kids and six teachers who were killed last Friday.

But this parish is sending love and prayer from more than 70 miles away.

"We gather this evening as a community of faith to be one with the suffering families and the local community of Newtown, CT," Sister Betty Broughan read during the vigil. "Comfort them with the memories of goodness, let your presence shine on them."

"I just kept praying for strength for the families and comfort for the families," said parishioner Melanie Cote.

Parishioners wiped tears as 26 people laid angels with each victim's name next to a candle.

They say that after the vigil, family will never be far from mind.

"Hold them closer, think of them every day," said parishioner John Rueli.

Throughout this week, the victims will continue to be laid to rest.
