Eastern States Exposition in casino talks

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

While Holyoke is backing out of the casino race, West Springfield may be jumping in.

Eastern States Exposition President and CEO Gene Cassidy told CBS 3 that they have begun an investigation as to whether or not a casino resort would be viable on their 175 acres of fairgrounds.

Cassidy says they are enthusiastically exploring all options and may have a major announcement in the near future.

Here is Cassidy's full statement:

"As the No. 1 tourist attraction in Western Massachusetts, Massachusetts and New England, strategically located at the crossroads of New England, with a 175-acre campus and millions of visitors, we are continuously engaged in the discovery of economic opportunities that will enhance the entertainment options we offer to the public.

"Consequently, we have in recent weeks embarked on an investigation as to whether or not it would be feasible for the Eastern States Exposition, as a non-profit organization, to pursue the concept of citing a regional resort entertainment destination casino on our grounds, that would benefit the entire Western Massachusetts region.

"We are enthusiastically exploring all of our options, and may have a major announcement in the near future."
