MGM picks up two major endorsements

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

MGM has received endorsements from the Springfield police and firefighters unions.

"When we're talking about public safety and a company comes to town and immediately reaches out to the police and fire unions you know they are serious," said the President of the Springfield Patrolmen's Union Joseph Gentile.

"We sat down with them, they will tell you it wasn't an easy meeting," said the President of the Springfield Firefighter's Union David Wells. "We had a lot of questions and we did our homework."

In fact, Wells says that part of their reason for supporting the company came after hearing from other fire stations that have worked with the casino operator.

"We reached out to our brothers and sisters in Vegas who represents the strip and they said that MGM's commitment to public safety is second to none," said Wells.

Tuesday MGM and Penn National Gaming, the two operators vying to build a casino in Springfield, addressed hundreds during a public forum. CBS 3 asked the company's president how he's feeling after the meeting.

"For us it was an opportunity to show the totality of our project," said Bill Hornbuckle, the president and chief marketing officer for MGM and president of MGM Springfield. "We had brought some new dimensions to it that the public hadn't seen before. And, I think the real value was and frankly we were highly impressed by the questioned periods."

Penn National Gaming has an event planned for next week to unveil more details on their proposal. MGM says that they have some big plans on the horizon as well.

"We're looking at some entertainment and some other things on the community. We have a couple of announcements up our sleeve, but nothing at this time I'm going to announce," said Hornbuckle.
