SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Former Springfield police officer Jeffrey Asher is no longer behind bars.

An official with the Department of Correction told CBS 3 he's been assigned to the day reporting center.

This means Asher is now back at home, but must report to authorities every day and is not allowed to leave his house without permission.

In march Asher was sentenced to 18 months in jail after he was convicted on assault and battery charges for the 2009 beating of Melvin Jones.
