Man in custody after standoff in East Longmeadow

EAST LONGMEADOW, MA (WSHM) -

An East Longmeadow man is facing several charges including threatening to commit murder for pulling a knife on several people in his home Monday night during an argument.

The initial call came in around 6 p.m. for a tenant dispute. When police arrived at the home at 14 Roderick Avenue, the victim said the suspect, Stephen Powell, pulled a knife on him and potentially had a gun and had barricaded himself in the home.

State, East Longmeadow and Springfield police stood outside the home for more than two hours.

"At that time we were under the assumption that he was armed with a gun and a knife," said Sgt. Steven Manning of the East Longmeadow police department.

Police set up a perimeter closing off nearby roads, a state police negotiator was called in and nearby neighbors were evacuated.

"It's getting under my skin a little bit now because its the unknown you don't know what to expect what's going to happen," said Dan Palmioli, neighbor.

But an hour and a half after police were called to the scene, Powell emerged from the home with his hands in the air.

He was cuffed and rushed to a nearby cruiser.

Police said this is a situation where their training pays off.

"That's why we treat every instant as a possible firearm...it obviously could have gone very bad but thank god it didn't," Manning said.

Powell faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon assault and battery and threat to commit murder. He will be arraigned in Palmer District Court Tuesday.
