After a quarter of a century leading the Springfield Boys and Girls Club, executive director Gary McCarthy has announced his retirement.
McCarthy took over as executive director back in the late 1980s and said he has seen plenty of change in that time.
Part of that change is more fundraisers to counteract less funding, such as the club's current Festival of Trees.
While a lot has happened in his 25 years, McCarthy said certain things with the kids have remained constant.
"They obviously want to learn things, do better in school and have tutoring," said McCarthy. "But they still need to have fun and they want to have fun. Those are the things that maybe stayed the same, but yet there seems to be a greater need for that type of thing."
To allow for a smooth transition, McCarthy said his retirement will take effect in August of next year.
