Police said two men allegedly shot an elderly homeowner while trying to scam him.
Officers responded to a shooting call just before 1 p.m. Officials said they believe two men came to a home on North 99th Street near Leavenworth Road to try and scam the homeowner. The victim told them he opened his door to find two men wearing hard hats.
There are conflicting reports about whether the men tried to pass themselves off as construction workers or utility company employees to try to scam their way into the home.
After talking to the homeowner, a fight ensued and one of the suspects shot the man in his 70s in the abdomen.
The crime has people in the neighborhood located near the Legends shopping center shaken up.
"Right across the street and earlier I heard sirens, but I looked around and didn't see anything, so I came driving down the street and I saw all the commotion, so I'm very concerned," neighbor Robert Hutchison said.
There is no word on the extent of the victim's injuries, but initial reports said they are critical.
Police said the suspects then drove off in a white utility truck. Officials are still looking into what, if anything, was taken.
"It's a quiet neighborhood. This is probably unusual for this area, so hopefully we can figure out more leads to develop this investigation," Patrick McCallop with the Kansas City, KS, Police Department said.
The Kansas City, KS, Police Department's Criminal Investigation Bureau is encouraging anyone with additional information regarding the incident to please call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
