The town's gazebo in Monson and the tree that sits inside were found to be vandalized over the weekend and the discovery has many in the town upset and ready to take action.
"On Sunday my husband and I went down to the gazebo," said Jean Bailey, a member of the Monson Rotary Club. "The tree is set up at the gazebo in Monson. We went to put the ornaments on the tree and, when we got there it was decorated with condoms and condom wrappers. It was pretty disgusting and there was graffiti written on the walls in the interior"
Bailey says the town's tree and gazebo have special meaning. The ornaments placed on the tree are purchased in memory of those who have lost loved ones and she says that's why she finds the recent vandalism to the site so saddening.
"It is just very upsetting to us," said Bailey.
After seeing the gazebo, Bailey asked members of the community to help to clean it up.
"People have been calling and volunteering to help us clean it up which is an unbelievable response," said Bailey. "I probably have gotten over a dozen phone calls today."
Bailey says this isn't the first time the gazebo has been vandalized. And, she says that the Rotary Club is starting to raise funds to put a security camera in the area in an attempt to stop the behavior in the future.
"We are hoping we can raise the funds to do that, that is our goal right now," said Bailey.
If you'd like to help clean up any damage that remains or donate to the fund to buy a security camera you should contact the Monson rotary. Their telephone number is 413-267-9984.
