WMECo requests 4.5% rate increase

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Western Massachusetts Electric Company is requesting a 4.5 percent increase in electric supply rates, scheduled to begin on Jan. 1, 2013. The request was filed with the commonwealth's Department of Public Utilities on Friday.

If approved, WMECo's Basic Service charge will go from 6.733 cents per kilowatt hour to 7.437 cents. WMECo says customers who use an average of 500 kilowatt-hours per month will see their increase by about $3.50. The increase will only impact customers who choose to use WMECo Basic Service as their electric supplier.

WMECo says the proposed increase is based on a rise in the cost of natural gas.
