It has been almost nine months since Baystate opened its new MassMutual wing and the Davis Family Heart & Vascular Center in Springfield.
On Thursday, Baystate Medical Center's newly constructed and named Sadowsky Family Pediatric Emergency Department was officially revealed about two weeks before its grand opening on Dec. 3.
From the waiting room to intensive care units, every detail in this facility has been designed with children in mind.
This new children's facility is part of a $45 million emergency department made possible from the financial support of the Sadowsky family.
For more than 60 years, the family has owned Williams Distributing Corp. in Chicopee.
"The colors, the lights are going to make them feel at home, and comforted and less scared," said Lindsey Grossman, chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Baystate's Children's Hospital.
However, this brand-new wing has much more to offer than just the colorful decor.
"In our old emergency department, we had gurneys right up next to each other. Here we've got large, spacious rooms that are glass-walled if need to be observing, curtains if we don't," Grossman said.
The facility also has 17 private treatment rooms, in addition to state-of-the-art resuscitation and imaging centers that cater to young people up to 21 years old.
Once this new facility opens in just a couple weeks, Baystate officials said they will be able to deliver better medical services to children than ever.
Several Baystate officials also believe this will benefit this medical facility in the long run in a variety of ways, specifically attracting more skilled doctors.
"Anytime you have a contemporary facility, great staff surrounding our physicians, and the most advanced technology, it makes it a more attractive place for providers," said Mark Tolosky, president and CEO of Baystate Health.
This emergency department is the only pediatric-dedicated facility in the region.
