Father surprises son after returning home from deployment

Posted: Updated:

Technical Sgt. Robbie Lahair arrived home from a six-month deployment Thursday morning, and after getting off the bus with the rest of the troops at Westover Air Reserve Base he headed right over to Bowie Memorial Elementary School for a very special visit.

Lahair surprised his 10-year-old son, Trent, who had no idea his dad was coming home.

"My heart just like stopped because I thought he wasn't coming back for a long time, and I was just hoping he would come back and now it finally happened," said Trent.

"I was supposed to be here a couple of days ago, it took a little while, but I am glad to be home," said Lahair.

Lahair is a reservist assigned to the 439th security forces squadron. He's spent the past several months in Southeast Asia and, before his reunion with Trent, several members of his family came out to the base to greet him as he returned home.

"I'm so excited; it has been six long months," said Lahair's girlfriend, Cheryl McLauglin.

"I'm proud of him," said Lahair's father, Walter Robbie Lahair Sr. "This is his second deployment. I've had a daughter that's been there; it all runs in our family."

"It's good that Robbie is coming back for the holidays," said Lahair's brother, Sean Lahair.

After the surprise homecoming, Trent got to leave school early. He says he's most looking forward to getting to play one of his favorite sports, hockey, with his dad.

Around 20 deployed reservists returned home Thursday with Lahair.
