SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

A mother and son are in the hospital after being hit a car in Springfield.

It happened around 4 Wednesday afternoon on White Street.

Police told CBS 3 that the woman was walking with her two sons when a 90-year-old woman driving a car veered onto the sidewalk, hitting the woman and one son.

Her other son was able to jump out of the way.

Police said the driver told them she was trying to avoid another pedestrian in the road when she swerved onto the sidewalk.

Witnesses described the scene to CBS 3.

"It looked like she was losing control and swerving, like she sped on the gas instead of the brakes, flew up over the sidewalk into the first driveway and hit a mother and her two teenage sons," said Shelley Alexander.

The mother did sustain head injuries.

Police said they are in the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
