Agawam PD warns residents about 'soda bottle bombs'

Posted: Updated:

Agawam police are now warning residents about soda bottle bombs in their town.

Over the last couple days, police have found several of them in mailboxes and yards.

Opening up your mailbox is something most of us do every day, but in Agawam, residents now have to think about what they'll find inside.

"You're going to your box and you could lose a hand or something you never know," said resident Mike Garvey.

He's talking about the recent discovery police have made around town.

Several residents have opened their mailbox to find a soda bottle bomb tucked inside. Two of those mailboxes have even exploded.

Luckily no one's been injured so far and police and the mayor's office have sent out blast emails and voice mails, but still some people around town were surprised to hear the news.

"This is the first I've heard, I haven't heard anything about it... I don't want to open up my mailbox and find anything like that," said resident Kim Koehler.

Police say these bottles are filled with caustic chemicals. Once the pressure rises in the bottle  it explodes, and could potentially cause severe injury.

"I know what it is from the military, we used to make them, and they're dangerous, real dangerous," said resident Andre Bernatchez.

Now residents say the ordinary task of checking their mail will become a little more nerve wracking.

"I'll probably be a little leery of checking my mail," Koehler said.

Police say this is an ongoing criminal investigation. But public safety is their top priority.

If you see a bottle in your mailbox or yard, do not pick it up and call 911.
