State officials overseeing East Longmeadow voting

EAST LONGMEADOW, MA (WSHM) -

Officials from the Secretary of State's Office are spending the day in East Longmeadow helping to make sure that everything goes smoothly following last month's voter fraud scandal in the town.

"They provided really good oversight on certain things just to make sure everything is done right," said East Longmeadow Town Clerk Tom Florence.

More than 400 East Longmeadow residents' party affiliations were changed after absentee ballots were requested without their knowledge. And one of the candidates running to represent the 2nd Hampden District, Jack Villamaino, remains at the center of that scandal. He has not officially been named a suspect, though officials have searched his home and last month he resigned from his post as a town selectman.

"The voter confidence, the integrity of the process is very critical here," Florence said.

Everyone who was affected by the voter fraud was able to vote as usual in the primary elections.

"The people who did have their party's changed illegally are on a list so that when they come in there's business as usual," Florence said.

Villamaino is running against Longmeadow Select Board member Marie Angelides for the Republican nomination. Angelides beat Villamaino in the 2010 primary by just 284 votes. The winner on Thursday will face off against incumbent Democrat Brian Ashe.

Now there was a slight hiccup Thursday for people voting in the town's first two precincts.

"The issue today that we caught early on first thing is in two of the precincts the Democratic ballots were not reading and we discovered it was a ballot issue," Florence said.

Voters affected by that issue were instructed to place their ballots into a side bin. Those ballots will be hand counted at the end of the night.

And, despite the recent issues in the town officials say the voting turnout in East Longmeadow was higher than expected.
