Westfield police officer Jose Torres struck and killed

Posted: Updated:

A police officer is dead after being hit by a dump truck while on road detail.

Right around 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning, officer Jose Torres was struck by a vehicle.

Around 9:30 a.m., they were told officer Torres did not survive.

"I've been here 27 years and I don't recall in those 27 years losing an officer on the job," said Capt. Hippolito Nunez of the Westfield Police Department.

That changed Thursday morning, as officer Jose Torres was struck by a construction vehicle while doing road detail on Pontoosic Road.

After being stabilized at the scene, police said he died later at Baystate Medical Center. Torres' co-workers said he was a positive influence on the force.

"He loved coming to work," said Nunez. "He loved being a police officer. He loved helping people. Truly, that was his passion. Helping people, being a part of their lives, and making it better."

"Oh, I didn't believe it. I'm still in shock, believe me," stated Bob Valliere, a Springfield resident who lives just up the road from the site of the accident.

Valliere also knew officer Torres personally.

"They do not get any better. Great sense of humor, do anything for you," said Valliere.  "I see his brother quite a bit. He drives a school bus. They are nice people."

Now, as Westfield police reflect on officer Torres' life, they know it will not be easy moving forward.

"For us here at the police department, he will be missed dearly," said Nunez. "As a personal friend, I will miss him forever."

Torres is survived by his wife, Kara, and their two sons.

The incident is still under investigation by Massachusetts State Police and the Westfield Police Department.

Police said they will make funeral plans public when they are finalized.
