Owner of dead dogs says air conditioner killed them

WESTFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

It was an anonymous email that led MSPCA officials to Coggin Creek Stables on Granville Road in Westfield.

Last Thursday, the owner of the stables, Brenda Coggin, said she opened the door to her kennels to find a pet owner's worst nightmare.

"I noticed when I walked in that everybody was quiet and I even kissed to them and no one moved, and then I saw the blood and I looked at them and realized all my dogs were dead," Coggin recalled.

She and her friends buried her nine prize show and breeding Australian shepherds beside the kennel later that night.

It's a move she's now being investigated for. Coggin said it's a tragic accident.

"I couldn't leave them there like that all night long, I wouldn't have been able to sleep knowing my dogs were laying like that all night long."

MSPCA officials confirmed with CBS 3 they're now investigating Coggin for animal cruelty.

She believes faulty air conditioning was to blame for the deaths of her dogs because when she opened the door to the kennel, she smelled a strange chemical odor.

"I also had a vet tech here that night... and even that vet said it certainly sounds like freon poisoning," Coggin said.

Freon can be found in refrigerants like those in air conditioners and can cause an individual or in this case, maybe a dog to vomit blood, make breathing difficult and if exposed long enough, death.

Wednesday afternoon an MSPCA official was at the kennels and took the air conditioner in question for investigation.

Now Coggin copes with the loss of her dogs while defending her innocence in their deaths.

"How can you judge me when you don't know me? The last thing I would do is harm an animal, I love all my animals," Coggin said, "I love them to death."

Coggin said she plans on continuing to breed Australian shepherds.

MSPCA and Westfield Animal Control are still investigating.
