Springfield man shot in own home

Posted: Updated:

A Springfield man is rushed to the hospital Wednesday night after police say he was shot inside his Pine Point neighborhood home. Neighbors were shaken up by the shooting.

"Everyone was just screaming and running across the street. It was really scary. My heart was just racing," says Jessica Vargas, who lives across the street from the gun shot victim's home.

Several neighbors say as many as seven gun shots shattered the silence on Humbert Street in the city's East Springfield neighborhood. Bullets were fired into a duplex at 59-61 Humbert Street and shattered the glass. Police say one bullet struck a man in his early 30s.

"It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous," says 18-year-old Vargas. "The violence in Springfield needs to stop. This is crazy."

The shooting happened around 7:30 Wednesday evening. Springfield police on scene say they're not sure if the man who was shot was the intended victim or not, but his family says he lives at 61 Humbert. Police are not releasing the victim's identity. Cops say the bullet went through his arm and lodged its way into his abdomen. Officials say he is at Bay State Medical Center and is expected to survive.

"Nothing like this has ever happened before," says Vargas, who has lived on Humbert Street for three years. "I was really scared, especially when my son started screaming. I panicked."

Vargas says a shooting like this has rattled the comfort level on the block.

"A bullet doesn't have anybody's name on it. Who knows? If it happened a first time, it could happen a second time and a third time."

As Springfield police continue investigating, neighbors say they're still shaken up. Some say they're even scared to sleep at night.
