David Ortiz hit the 452nd and 453rd home runs of his career, moving past Boston great Carl Yastrzemski into 36th place on the all-time list. It was the third multihomer game of the season for Ortiz and the 44th of his career.
TORONTO (AP) - Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino was not in the lineup for last night's series opener against the Blue Jays. Victorino played a pair of games over the weekend after being out since late May with an injured right hamstring.
TORONTO (AP) - Red Sox first baseman Ryan Lavarnway went 0 for 4 in the first game of his rehab assignment at Double-A Portland last night. Lavarnway has been sidelined since late May with a fractured left hand. He has appeared in four games with the Red Sox this season.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The New England Patriots have placed five players on the physically unable to perform list including cornerback Alfonzo Dennard and wide receiver Aaron Dobson and another four on the non-football injury list. The designations can be lifted at any time and basically mean the players didn't pass their pre-training camp physicals.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The Patriots have signed rookie free agent defensive lineman Eathyn Manumaleuna and released rookie free agent DL Seali'i Epenesa. Manumaleuna was originally signed by the New York Giants as a rookie free agent out of Brigham Young in May.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions have claimed wide receiver Reese Wiggins off waivers. Wiggins was released by the New England Patriots last week. He had 26 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns last year at East Carolina and caught 80 passes for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns over three seasons.
BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Celtics have announced a new alternate logo. It was created in-house. The Celtics say it features a modern taken on the classic image of Lucky the leprechaun spinning a basketball refurbished in a clean contemporary style.
AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Massachusetts men's soccer coach Sam Koch (coke) has died after a two-year battle with sinus cancer. Koch led the Minutemen to a berth in the 2007 College Cup. The university says he died Sunday at his Hadley home. He was 59.
FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez is due back in court for a status hearing in his Massachusetts murder case. Hernandez has pleaded not guilty to killing semi-professional football player Odin Lloyd. The hearing is scheduled for this morning in Superior Court in Fall River.
