ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Rookie Mookie Betts hit his first career grand slam last night as the Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4. Anthony Ranaudo pitched six effective innings after he was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket before the game. He gave up three runs and has won all three of his big league starts.
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Taysom Hill threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores to help BYU beat UConn 35-10 last night and spoiling Huskies coach Bob Diaco's debut. After falling behind 28-7, the Huskies held BYU in check for much of the second half, but had a hard time getting their own offense going. Casey Cochran and Chandler Whitmer split duties and threw for a combined 284 yards.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Tim Wright could be a part of the tight end puzzle for the New England Patriots. With Rob Gronkowski trying to get back on the field after another injury, Wright had four catches for 43 yards in the Patriots' exhibition finale against the Giants Thursday. He was targeted two other times in the 16-13 loss. The Patriots acquired Wright last week for six-time Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins.
NORTON, Mass. (AP) - In the final tournament before Ryder Cup teams are set, Keegan Bradley did his best Friday to make an impression in the Deutsche Bank Championship. So did Webb Simpson. Bradley played bogey-free in a gentle breeze at the TPC Boston for a 6-under 65, giving him the lead among early starters in the second FedEx Cup playoff event.
