WALLINGFORD, Conn. (AP) - Plans for a high-speed rail system
taking passengers from New Haven, Conn., through western
Massachusetts and into Vermont will soon be detailed.

Transportation officials from the three states have planned a
public meeting Thursday to review potential environmental impacts.

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell has promised to nearly match a
request for $220 million in federal money for the project. That's
in addition to $40 million in federal economic stimulus money for
track improvements.

Massachusetts has received $70 million in stimulus money to
upgrade deteriorated tracks from Springfield to Vermont. Vermont
obtained $50 million to rebuild tracks, replace cross ties and make
other improvements for trains from Massachusetts to St. Albans in
northwestern Vermont.

The project is part of a multibillion-dollar initiative kicked off by President Barack Obama.
