Disabled ask lawmakers to prevent deeper cuts

BOSTON (AP) - Groups representing disabled residents in
Massachusetts are urging state lawmakers to give Gov. Deval Patrick
expanded budget-cutting authority.

The Association of Developmental Disability Providers and the
ARC sent a letter Thursday to House and Senate members saying they
have faced "dramatic cuts" in state funding during five rounds of
budget reductions the past year.

They say those cuts will only be deeper if Patrick cannot reduce
spending outside the Executive Branch.

Members of the House and Senate refused to give Patrick the
power to cut their budgets and those in the Judiciary before they
ended formal sessions for the year on Wednesday.

Lawmakers also restored funding for their own budgets and
reversed Patrick's proposal to eliminate two state worker holidays:
Evacuation Day and Bunker Hill Day.
