BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) - Residents of Barnstable on Cape Cod
have voted to change the town's form of government by a single
vote.

Town Clerk Linda Hutchenrider said voters on Tuesday approved
the charter ballot question 2,580 to 2,579. More than 200 voters
that turned in ballots left the question blank.

Hutchenrider tells the Cape Cod Times she does not believe there
is any way to recount or petition the vote, but says she will
consult with the Secretary of State's office on Wednesday.

The charter change will reduce the town council from 13 to 11
members starting in 2011, and allow voters to choose at-large
councilors as well as district councilors. Now, all councilors are
elected by district.

About 17 percent of the town's registered voters cast ballots.
