DA: police gunfire killed Mass. man in standoff

By CBS 3 Springfield News

WESTMINSTER, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say an autopsy shows that
Massachusetts correction officer was fatally shot in the legs by
police after brandishing a handgun and making threats at a
Fitchburg bar.

The Worcester district attorney's office said Wednesday that
49-year-old Michael A. Membrino of Westminster shot at two police
officers who came to his home after the bar incident Sunday night.
They fired back, hitting him in each leg.

Membrino, who was wearing body armor, died shortly afterward at
a Gardner hospital. No one else was at his home at the time of the
shooting.

The Massachusetts Department of Correction says Membrino was an
officer at the North Central Correctional Institution, a medium
security facility in Gardner.

Officials say Membrino had brandished a handgun while making
threats at Partners Pub in Fitchburg earlier Sunday.
