Cross-dressing MA doc who killed wife found hanged

By CBS 3 Springfield News

NORFOLK, Mass. (AP) - A cross-dressing dermatologist serving
life in prison for killing his wife has been found hanged in his
cell.

Richard Sharpe was found by his cellmate at MCI-Norfolk last
night. A spokeswoman for the Department of Correction says Sharpe
tied a bedsheet to the top bunk.

The Gloucester dermatologist was convicted of shooting his wife,
Karen, with a rifle in her Wenham home in July 2000. Prosecutors
said Sharpe killed his wife because he was angry over the prospect
of losing $3 million in their divorce.

The case drew national attention when photographs surfaced of
Sharpe wearing slinky dresses and fishnet stockings.

He was acquitted in 2007 of charges he plotted to kill the
prosecutor in his murder trial.

Sharp's lawyer, Michael Traft, is calling for a thorough
investigation of his client's death, saying he had not seemed
depressed during recent conversations.

An autopsy is planned.
