A working smoke detector and fast action by Southwick volunteer firefighters saved the vacant Hereford's Steak and Ale on College Highway from more serious damage.

State fire investigators say the fire began around 6 a.m. Monday in a heater located along an outside wall. The flames climbed to the roof of the converted dairy barn, but the fire was stopped before the landmark could be destroyed.

The former Chuck's Steakhouse suffered a kitchen fire three years ago and never re-opened. Hereford's opened in 2006, but closed this past summer.

The building is currently for sale.
