Having a child is an exciting time for all parents. But for some mothers, it's overshadowed by Postpartum Depression.

Most of the symptoms of Postpartum Depression are similar to major depression. In Thursday's HouseCalls, Dr. Rebecca Lundquist, Director of Ambulatory Psychiatry at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, joined us live via Skype.

Dr. Lundquist said the symptoms are guilt, worthlessness, and reduced energy and appetite. Researchers do not really know what causes Postpartum Depression but there are risk factors. For example, personal or family history of depression or Postpartum Depression.

Dr. Lundquist said treatments are psychotherapy and/or medication, also, group therapy with other mothers with Postpartum. She also said the whole family needs to help out. The mother should at least get a good 6 hours of sleep.

Interview with Dr. Lundquist was very informative. Interesting subject matter. Would imagine there are many new mothers suffering from post partum depression without realizing there's help for them in our area.
