Stroke is the second leading cause of death after heart disease. So it's important to know the signs in order to get the help you need. Once you're there, new technology is helping to save lives.

Dr. Charles Cavagnaro III, MD, president and CEO of Wing Memorial Hospital and Medical Centers said, "Stroke is what we would like people to call a brain attack. It's much like a heart attack. It's when an area of the brain is not getting oxygenated blood that would keep the brain tissue alive."

Dr. Cavagnaro stands in front of one of the tools used to keep people alive. He said, "This camera is taking a picture of me and its suppose to be taking a picture of someone who's potentially having a stroke."

It's pointed directly at the bed so a stroke specialist at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester on the other end can help save a life.

Dr. Cavagnaro said, "Who can ask patients questions along with a physician here and make decisions."

The camera is invaluable because specialists are in short-supply.

Dr. Cavagnaro, "There's only so many specialists. There are more hospitals, emergency rooms, than there are specialist."

While doctors are imperative, you also have to help. Minutes count.

Dr. Cavagnaro said, "Don't call the doctor. Don't drive yourself to the hospital. Call 911."

The symptoms are easy to remember.

Dr. Cavagnaro said, "We want people to remember the word F-A-S-T."

Face: Droop and Numbness
Arm: Clumsy and Weak
Speech: Garbled, Can't find words
Time: ASAP

So when the clock is ticking down after a stroke the best place to be is here in the ER.

The risk factors for stroke are similar to heart disease: smoking, drinking, family history and high blood pressure and cholesterol.
