Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the South African former Noble Peace Prize Winner and equal rights activist, spoke to students at American International College Tuesday.

AIC kicked off the Desmond Tutu Public Health Awareness Series and awarded the Archbishop an honorary degree at Symphony Hall Tuesday afternoon.

For many students, this was the first opportunity to listen to Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But in all the years of the Archbishop's travels, he still believes that today's youth are the ultimate tool in shaping the future.

"I believe in these young people.” said Archbishop Tutu. “It is we who mess them up frequently. We adults mess them up."

Archbishop Tutu serves on the Medical Knowledge Institute's Board of Advisors, which will open its first U.S. branch right here in Springfield.

The Archbishop spoke about pressing global issues such as AIDS, poverty, and equality. After his monologue, students had the opportunity to ask questions in a highly-formatted Q-and-A session. The Archbishop said adults should be impressed by this crowd’s selfless concerns.

"They have hardly spoken about 'what must we do for us to benefit?'” said Archbishop Tutu. “They've been speaking about others out there. This is just fantastic."

Archbishop Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his role in ending South African apartheid.
