State Police say a Westfield man drowned while kayaking in the neighboring town of Granville Tuesday afternoon. It took hours for rescue workers to recover his body.

Just after 2:00 one of a group of three kayakers got into trouble and somehow came out of their kayak. One of them was pinned between rocks and debris further down the Hubbard Brook.

Granville Fire Chief James Meadows says, "It sounds like it's prime for kayaking but it's also dangerous. We don't really know what happened. All we know is that there was an accident."

State Police say 47 year old James P. O'Brien apparently drowned.

His body remained in the river for several hours while crews worked into the night to recover the body.

The water was running very high, fast, and cold, making it difficult for crews to get into the water.

Meadows said "We have to bring the person across the river. The person is on the opposite side of the river from where they need to be.
It's rough terrain. There is no road, just a walking trail. They are trying to carry gear."

For other kayakers it's a grim reminder how powerful the water can be.

Meadows said "These people seem to be experienced but there is risk. The problem is they are out there. We are way out in the woods here and it takes a long time to get help here."

CBS 3 Springfield was on the scene throughout the recovery operation and will update the story on CBS 3 Springfield News at 4pm, 6pm and 11pm and here at cbs3springfield.com.

What is misleading about this story? Unfortunately this day ended in tragedy for someone partaking in a dangerous sport. Accidents can happen to anyone, that is why they are called accidents. By the way, the "idiot on the side of the road" was the incident commander of the recovery operation. While he may not be an experienced kayaker, I think he probably had pretty accurate information of what was going on at the scene.

My deepest condolences go out to Jims family, friends and students and I thank my brother Matthew Wilson a volunteer FireFighter of West Hartland for dedicating so much of himself to help others and to help Jim. Rest i n peace Jim.

My deepest sympathy to Jim's family, students and friends. This tragic accident proves that the river can overpower even the most experienced and accomplished. Thanks to all of the volunteer emergency service personnel from Granville and Tolland who worked relentlessly to recover Ji'm's body - and to East Hartland, West Hartland, Granby abd Winstead CT volunteer fire departments and ambulance services for their backup.

Channel 3, if you don't know the facts don't print them. Don't listen to any idiot on the side of the road and then go on air and vomit the story back up. Jim was one of the most accomplished boaters in New England. One of the most safety conscious people on the river. This was strictly an accident. 90% of what you printed is wrong as I have first hand knowledge. You should be ashamed to call yourself a new organization. Rest in Peace Jim. You will be missed!!

My condolences to the family. I think we'll be seeing more people in the river coming up as the Wildwater races in Huntington will be held in April and more are practicing. Just this past Monday, somebody dumped in the river in Westfield and the state police in Russell had to respond to that one. The person made it to an island and was rescued without being hurt. The river is raging even though it doesn't appear to be all that intimidating, let's be mindful of that.

These volunteers were covered with mud, carrying heavy gear, hungry, thirsty, and freezing in the water, and they did these things for 8 hours for FREE and without any expectation of reward! They are amazing. Thanks to Granville, Tolland, and West Hartland VOLUNTEER Fire Departments. Remember them in your gifts and prayers. Its tragic when anyone dies this way. However, it gave a chance for the finest men and women in the hilltowns to demonstrate their devotion to helping their fellow man when emergencies arrise!! Thank you SO MUCH!
