The auditorium at the Warner School in Springfield was packed with students, teachers, fire officials and even the Mayor. They were there for 9-year-old Ian Marron.

On Valentine's Day, a fire consumed Ian's mobile home in Springfield, but he and his family are safe, thanks to skills he learned in the classroom.

"I turned around and yelled fire and then I ran into my moms room and did the same thing and they woke up, " says Ian.

His mother says thanks to Ian they are alive.

"I didn't hear it, and my my fiance didn't hear the smoke alarms, he's hard of hearing, if wasn't for him I don't think we would have made it out of there at all, " says Michelle Marron.

On Tuesday, Springfield's Mayor, the Fire Commissoner, and the Superintendent of Schools honored little Ian. They presented him with the Young Hero Award.

"His story is the example that if you learn fire safety skills at an early age they will stay with them for the rest of their lives, " says Fire Commissioner Gary Cassanelli.

Fire education is being taught in Schools across the city, something Ian says everyone should know. And even at such a young age, Ian says he did what any one of his classmates would have done.

"I still don't feel like a hero it was just the right thing to do, " says Ian.
