With the 2010 U.S. Census close by, the largest civic awareness campaign in U.S. history is making stops in Western Massachusetts.

The Portrait of America Road Tour arrived at the YMCA of Greater Springfield Tuesday afternoon. Interactive kiosks provide visitors with answers to frequently asked questions about the census and its impact on local communities.

"We're trying to identify different community organizations that use the census numbers for the data as well as funding purposes, like the YMCA.” said Melissa Trzasko, a partnership specialist with the U.S. Census Bureau. “This is a real exciting opportunity to show the community how their money is actually being spent."

The 13 vehicles covering more than 150,000 miles around the country also provide promotional videos, exhibits, and samples of the questionnaires to be mailed in mid-March.

The road tour will make stops at UMass, Holyoke Mall at Ingleside, and Eastfield Mall in Springfield later this month.
