Out of hotels and into shelters. That's the action one local state senator has been saying for a while when it comes to the area's homeless.

It's something State Senator Stephen Buoniconti has been saying all along and now the state is finally beginning to listen. But sadly it had to take a six-week-old baby dying and another child left alone inside the Clarion Hotel in West Springfield to hightlight an ongoing problem.

"The lack of supervision in hotels and motels is leading to all of these problems if you put individuals into shelters you wouldn't have these issues, " says Buoniconti.

He, with the help from State Representative Jim Welch, is pushing legislation to change the current system, hoping to change the way the homeless are housed. He filed a bill last year to find a more cost effective solution.

"On average it's about 85 dollars a night, that adds up to 2500 dollars a month that you and I are paying, the taxpayers to put people there, " adds Buoniconti.

Until changes are made and more shelters are built, Buonicounti says more children will be at risk

"Most of these hotels don't have kitchens so if their baby needs milk you can't store it there, that's how bad it is, it's not safe for them, " explains Buoniconti.

The recent incidents at the Clarion Hotel has prompted owners to stop allowing homeless families live there, Buoniconti hopes more hotels will catch on.

Remove the sex offenders, druggies and ex cons along with the people who migrate here for the sweet benefits and there would be a lot of room for the really needy.
